This new section is a tribute to all you weekend warriors out there. This is your time to shine! We’ll keep a close eye on cool projects worth sharing. This time An awesome DIY project recently posted on Reddit caught our eye. We tracked down the original DIY hero to tell us all about this amazing project.

Please introduce yourself to our community

My name is Eric Proulx, a software developer in Seattle, WA for a startup company. I’ve done a few DIY projects with my dad but this was my first design.

Tell us more about the story behind the project

I spend a lot of my time on the computer and I’ve had the opportunity to work in a lot of different environments. From the cubicle desk to the open floor plan, they all had their ups and downs. I sort of started keeping track of which features I liked and which I didn’t. The broad, long computer desk just doesn’t seem to exist online (at least the specs I wanted) without having to pay a lot of money. I figured I might as well see if I could do it myself on a budget and then add on some of my wishes.

What tips and advice would you like to share with newbies?

I don’t know if this is cliche or not, but really get a feel for what you like. I like big desks and I cannot lie, but others might deny this and opt for something different. Having a clear set of measurements by me bringing my tape measure to work, to Ikea and getting a feel of what type of dimensions I prefer working with helped a lot. But the big push for me was actually getting the door which would be the base of my desk. I actually had my desired specs picked out months ago, but it wasn’t until I spent the effort to buy the door from which it was made of, when things really got going.

What DIY projects do you have in mind for the future?

I’m expecting a baby boy in the next month so I don’t know if I’ll have time for many other projects. Some of my wishlist projects would be to rebuild the fence and building a sheltered outdoor area for my dog.
